On 5th April, 1917, two companies of the 6th Royal West Surrey (Queens) battalion of 37 Brigade, 12th Division moved into the front line at Arras, while the other two moved into the protection of the cellars and caves at Arras. The start of the Battle of Arras was only four days away and things, especially artillery action, were hotting up. The battalion diary makes no mention of casualties on this day but it was likely that it was this shell fire that caused the death of George James.
